West Midlands Lib Dems Unite Against Rugby Airport
12.00.00am GMT Mon 11th Nov 2002
Warwickshire MEP Liz Lynne welcomed the unanimous support of the Liberal Democrats in the West Midlands Region after they passed a motion opposing the proposed Rugby Airport at their conference this weekend.
The motion was moved by Councillor Jerry Roodhouse, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council, and Liz herself.
Commenting on the vote, Liz said:
“The Liberal Democrats are now fighting these plans at every level, from the grassroots and across the region, to the national party. We are fully united against these proposals and are prepared to continue fighting if the Department for Transport decides to press ahead with these plans.
“What is more, we are the only party proposing a viable alternative – that of managing growth rather than simply moving the problem out of our own backyards. If this is to happen, we need an-EU wide agreement to tax aviation fuel for passenger liners, which is currently exempt. I would urge politicians from other parties to join us in this fight.”
