Powell Resignation - A Blow To Moderate Views In White House

4.49.54pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 15th Nov 2004

Liberal Democrat MEP Liz Lynne has reacted with disappointment to the news that Colin Powell is to step down as US Secretary of State.

Speaking following his resignation, the West Midlands Euro-MP said:

"Colin Powell was one of a few people in President Bush's cabinet that had respect throughout the world. His decision to resign, while not surprising, is very disappointing to those of us who had seen him as the one person arguing a more multilateral approach to foreign policy.

"If the President's response to losing Attorney General John Ashcroft was to pick Alberto Gonzales, who earlier this year described the Geneva Convention as 'quaint', then we can only fear who he has in mind for the post of Secretary of State."
