Reviewing Current Legislation Should Be Commission's First Task

4.33.32pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 18th Nov 2004

Commenting on the European Parliament's vote to approve the European Commission today, West Midlands Euro-MP Liz Lynne said the Commissions first task should be to review current legislation to make sure it is working.

The Liberal Democrat MEP said:

"I am delighted at long last we have a new Commission and I wish the new team well in the task they have in front of them over the next 5 years.

"The new Commissioner for my area of Employment and Social Affairs, Vladimir Spidla impressed the committee but now the tough task of tackling the many problems we have in the European Union begins.

"In particular I will be pushing Commissioner Spidla and the new Commission to look again at legislation to see if it is being fully implemented equally across the EU and withdraw Directives that are not working.

"The European Parliament has proved in the last month that it can hold the Commission to account and will continue to do so over the next 5 years."
