MEPs calls on India to recognise 1984 atrocities

6.05.24pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 29th Sep 2005

In an amendment to the report on the EU-India agreement MEPs called on the Government of India to hold the perpetrators to account for the 1984 violence against the Sikhs.

Liz Lynne MEP, who called for the atrocity to be fully investigated in her speech at this year's Sikh Conference in Wolverhampton said,

"I am pleased that this amendment was put forward. If the EU is to have strong diplomatic ties to India, we must have resolution and justice for the atrocities of 1984 against the Sikh community.

"India has promised that an investigation would be conducted and the perpetrators would be held to account, I hope they will fulfil that promise.

"It is a welcome sign that we as MEPs have begun to take a genuine interest in the affairs of Sikhs."

ENDS.
