Euro-MP chairs conference session on Kashmir at European Parliament

11.03.33am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 3rd Oct 2005

Chairing the first session today on the "international perception of the Kashmiri dispute," Liz Lynne MEP welcomed speakers including politicians and NGOs eager to resolve the conflict. The conference lasts two days and hopes to raise awareness of the issue.

Liz Lynne MEP, member of the South Asia delegation in the European Parliament, said in Brussels,

"We have seen some notable speakers today who are committed to a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir dispute. It is so encouraging to see representatives from all over the world assembling to exchange views about this subject.

"This two-day conference at the European Parliament is a good way to get the European Union more involved in helping to secure a lasting peace for the Kashmiri people. Kashmiris have been stuck in the middle of the conflict between India and Pakistan for decades and the international community must not forget about them.

"A peaceful resolution will only come with a three party solution. An excluded population that is not consulted will ultimately be an embittered population.

"It is important that the Kashmiri people are actively involved in the peace process. Whatever Pakistan and India decide the final say must be with the people of Kashmir - there cannot be a settlement without their agreement."
