Euro-MPs condemn Islamabad bombing

3.07.24pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 23rd Sep 2008

West Midlands Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Liz Lynne has co-signed a letter to Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari condemning Saturday's suicide truck bomb attack on the Islamabad's Marriott hotel which killed more than 50 people.

The letter expresses MEPs sympathy with the victims' families and reaffirms EU commitments to help combat terrorism.

Liz Lynne is a member of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with the Countries of South Asia and the Human Rights Subcommittee. She said:

"We wanted the Pakistani president to know that our thoughts are with him and the victims' families, and that we stand together with him in the fight against terrorism.

"The six-metre crater left behind shows the deadly force involved in this attack. There were some high-profile foreign casualties including the Czech ambassador to Pakistan and two US State Department officials, but we mustn't forget that local people bore the brunt of this attack. The terrorists should realise that they hurt their own people much more than anyone else when they carry out these horrific acts."
