No threat to eggs by the dozen, says Liz Lynne2.11.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 1st Jul 2010
Lib Dem Euro MP Liz Lynne has spoken out to reassure businesses and consumers that there is no threat of a ban to sell eggs by the dozen. The Lib Dem West Midlands MEP said there was no draft proposal to ban sales by quantity. Speaking at the Parliament in Brussels today, Liz Lynne said: "There has been some mischief making here. There is absolutely no plan to ban eggs by the dozen. "The only issue being discussed is whether packaging should also show the total weight of food items inside, whether it be six medium eggs, or four breakfast rolls, or ten fish fingers. "Liberal Democrat MEPs thought that a requirement to show the total weight wasn't necessary for things like eggs, so we put down an amendment to remove it. "Our sensible amendment was lost, partly because a number of MEPs failed to vote for it in the committee, including UKIP MEPs in committee. "But this does not mean that there is any plan only to allow things to be sold by weight, as the Parliament statement made clear yesterday." ENDS
